Just re-watched this movie the other week and was reminded how awesome these end titles are. Amazing.

Caravaggio is a 16th Century Italian painter best known for his paintings on the life of Christ. In his early 20s, Caravaggio painted some of the most stunning pieces of art ever created. Infamous in his own lifetime, known as a menace and brawler, eventually sent on the run from Rome for killing a man mid-brawl. There is something particularly intriguing that such a rough-round-the-edges character created such beautiful, inspirational and spiritual work. That said most of his art does focus on the dark times in the life of Christ and the evil of Rome as an empire reacted to being shook by one man. Caravaggio’s skill in composition and lighting is in my opinion unrivalled – absolutely my favourite painter of all time. His observation and technical skills combined with an ability to really capture mood and raw emotion is something to be held in awe. Today he is world renowned for his combination of naturalism and chiaroscuro starting his own movement of tenebrism and inspiring thousands after him. Hats off.

At the end of a year working in animation, I feel I should raise a toast to this man; Sylvain Chomet. His work has inspired me so immensely and it was his feature ‘Belleville Rendezvous’ that really pushed me over the edge into pursuing a career in visual arts. He does what he does so perfectly and without using a single word he expresses characters and narrative far more beautifully and descriptively than most other contemporary film makers. The short film ‘the vieille dame et les pigeons’ is on youtube in 3 parts and showcases much of what makes Chomet brilliant. But if you fancy it, I can hardly recommend more that you grab a copy of ‘Belleville Rendezvous’ and ‘The Illusionist’ on DVD and enjoy watching them over a lazy Christmas day.

Movember, cancer research and numerous other charities really are making a difference to cancer patients and treatments. Each year in the UK alone around 37, 000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and every year around 10,000 of these men will die. This works out as more than one man every hour. With greater public awareness, early detection is on the rise and mortality rates are now declining. More than this, new advances in medical technology are enabling cancer patients to return to active and productive lives after their treatment. On the face of it, Movember is an annual celebration of the moustache, but at the heart it is changing the lives of real men and their friends and families worldwide. Thank you to all involved! The Movember Gala Party last night was an absolutely amazing night. Men and woman of Britain – for your efforts in this charity I solidly salute you. Amazing costumes and moustaches, superb event and testimonies, and an overall great vibe from everyone getting behind this important cause. I finished grabbing footage last night for the Movember edit which will hopefully be coming out very soon.
